PWMA for supporting us and allowing us to do the work we do without delay or hassle. The video is relatively self explanatory but I will add a little more detail below for those who want to know more.7th Feb – 8.40am received call from Lisa Marabini to pack and be ready to leave in 45 minutes. Snare removal Kariba was what we knew at this early stage. On the 5 hour drive north further intel came in on location but due to the extremely thick bush there was zero info on sex, size and extent of injury. Either way we were on our way and we wouldn't turn back. On the road we were also told that we would likely have a snared Hyena to deal with in roughly the same location. He was on the move but they had a visual and would keep someone on him. Little did we know the state of this poor young male hyena at this stage. This amazing story will follow in the next day or so….Upon arrival we moved quickly into the location. There was 99% coverage of thick vegetation. The search for exact confirmation of location, and extent of the situation felt like it lasted hours. We were blessed to have Mark van Zuydam with us as his experience gave the team the confidence to move in closer and closer so that we could deal with the situation with the urgency it deserved. Eventually after circling the suspected position for almost 2 hours, there was a stroke of luck. A tiny window presented itself and Keith Dutlow was able to get a clear shot so we could immobilize the lion and get to work.I need to add that the reason we could not keep this young lion under anesthetic was due to the over-stimulation created by the entire scene. Sadly this was out of our control and everything was done to try and limit the stress level of the situation for this poor animal. At all times the welfare of the animals we treat is the #1 priority, as you will see by the pressure we dealt with to help this lion. While the above unfolded we managed to attract a crowd of excited onlookers. As time progressed this crowd grew to a size that you will see was bordering on a stadium feeling. We were located at the bottom of a gorge so everywhere we looked up there appeared to be more and more excited spectators. I'll let the video pick it up from here but please if anyone has questions, please feel free to email me @ aaron@awaretrust.org or message me via FB. A young lion in Zimbabwe that was caught in a snare trap found itself as the centre of attention of a crowd that continued to grow which hindered initial rescue efforts by vets from a charity last week. People living in the township of Kariba started reporting that they heard the roars of a lion emanating from a house and as they waited for assistance the crowd grew to about 1,000. The video shows vets from Aware Trust Zimbabwe trying to get the lion sedated. That was not an easy task fortunately with a little luck the Keith Dutlow one of the vets was able to get a clear shot and immobilise the lion.
The scene drew huge crowds
However, with the crowd so large, they were making so much noise the vets had the problem of keeping the lion anaesthetised because of overstimulation created by the scene. Finally, the vets were able to unable untangle the snare from tree and carried the lion to a vehicle nearby where they checked its condition and took an X-ray which fortunately revealed no broken bones. The rescuers released the lion back into the wild under the impression that the lion had not suffered any serious injury.
