Hong Kong To Destroy Its Stock Of Illegal Ivory

Hong Kong has said it will burn as much as twenty eight tons of illegal ivory which will make it the largest destruction of the contraband ever.

Hong Kong is the latest government to announce it will destroy its stockpile of illegal ivory, trailing the Philippines and the United States.

Last June the Philippines became the first country to destroy its ivory stock despite being an ivory consuming nation.

2014 To Be An Exciting Year For Aspinall Foundation

There will be a lot of new events taking place at Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Parks that look to be a lot of fun for the whole family.

Over the course of 2014 visitors can expect a number of different and exciting events at both parks which will take place during weekends and school holidays.

2014 is the 30th year of the Aspinall Foundation and the anniversary will be celebrated at both parks throughout April with a range of fun party games and special talks on animals.

Elephants Could Be Extinct Within 12 Years

Last October thousands of activists in cities all over the world marched against the ivory trade. There were marches organized in places as far apart as New York to Cape Town in response to the possibility that the elephant may soon be hunted to extinction. iWorry a conservation group estimates that every fifteen minutes an elephant is killed for its ivory. The group says last year 36,000 elephants were killed and if the killing goes on, elephants could be extinct in the wild within 12 years.

Billionaire Microsoft Cofounder To Fund Elephant Survey

Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen who started the company along with Bill Gates has made a large donation that will be used to fund a survey of elephant numbers in Africa that is designed to combat the increase in poaching that is resulting in the killing of an elephant every 15 minutes.

Mr. Allen is worth US$15.7 billion and will spend $8 million of his fortune on counting the number of elephants in 13 countries. The survey will make use of three fixed wing aircraft as well as two helicopters according to the charity Elephants Without Borders.

Port Lympne Proudly Welcomes New Gorilla Family

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park says it is thrilled to announce the arrival of a family of western lowland gorillas which is a species that is critically endangered.

The family of eight gorillas was transferred from sister park Howletts Wild Animal Park and is the second time Port Lympne has welcomed gorillas this year. The Park’s keepers say they are happy with how successful the transfer went. All the animals were checked by vets after being anaesthetized and were then transported in individual crates.

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Pleased To Announce Arrival of A Przewalski’s foal

Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is thrilled to announce the birth of a new Przewalski’s foal which goes a long way to helping conserve a species that for some time was actually extinct in the wild. The foal represents the first birth of its kind in almost a decade and arrived on 26th October.

Przewalski’s horses were last found in Mongolia which was the only place they could be found in the 1970’s. The species became extinct in the wild as they were hunted and found it increasingly difficult to compete with livestock for pasture and water.
