Bornean Orangutan Born in Devon Zoo

10th May 2013 UNDER Blog

Fantastic news reaches us from Paignton Zoo in Devon, UK where a baby Organutan has been born to her mother  Mali. This is the first Orangutan birth at the zoo for 16 years which is pretty amazing news, with mother and baby  reported to be doing well. The zoo have been keeping a “hands off” policy since the birth on 11th April 2013, but are 99.9% sure the baby is female.

The hands off policy seems to be working well as you can see from the picture above as mother and baby both look very relaxed in each others company!

Bornean Orangutans are an endangered species with less than 50,000 left in the wild.

Humans share an amazing 96.4% of our genetic make up with orangutans and you can help to protect our “almost” brothers by adopting an orangutan today.
