Watch This Video Of Diving Instructor Help Out A Shark

28th March 2017 UNDER Blog

A diving instructor who was teaching a scuba course to group of divers that were swimming in the Snapper Reef waters off the coast of the Cayman Islands saw a nurse shark lying in the sand. This in itself is not unusual because nurse sharks are known to exhibit this kind of behaviour. However, something did strike Brett Johnson as strange. In an interview with the Cayman Compass, he thought the shark was sleeping as first but then he noticed something protruding from its head.

Pulled a kitchen knife from the shark’s head

Mr Johnson of Reef Divers then swam down to the shark very calmly and pulled a kitchen knife that was stuck in its head. Mr Johnson said he doesn’t know why the shark ended up getting knifed in the head, but it was fortunate that the knife came out quite easily and the shark seemed to be doing alright. He added that the shark was seen a few days later swimming around the same reef.

The public need to be more aware

Whilst the story does have a happy ending the incident was still disturbing. Sharks have been a protected species in the Cayman Islands since 2015 but it would seem that some people still don’t understand this. Mr Johnson wrote on Facebook said that all public docks and boat launches should have signs posted on them warning tourists and the public that it is not legal to take sharks from Cayman waters. He said “it was sad to see things like this happen”
